I'm Old Fashioned
It's as if Jerome Kern wrote "I'm Old Fashioned" for me. I like to play jazz standards in a free and personal way, but with the knowledge of and respect for the tradition of this audible art form. For some people, this is being old fashioned. Yet others, who know me as a traditional jazz player, think of me as "modern". Of course, the critical listener decides for himself how to solve this antithesis. My opinion is that elements such as beautiful tone, technique, emotion and good taste should be present in every musician. For this reason, I am honored to be surrounded by the fabulous musicians on this album. Clearly aware of the roots of jazz music, they express themselves in a unequalled way, making each tune a little masterpiece. So despite the fact that these tunes were written many years ago (see W. Royal Stokes' liner notes), we make them sound fresh and alive - or better yet, HIP.
